Beware of economy class syndrome during long flight
Economy class syndrome is a general term for a series of symptoms caused by deep vein thrombosis of lower limbs during or after long distance flight.
2. Why is economy class syndrome easy to occur in economy class?
For the patients with economy class syndrome, the space in economy class is narrow and it is inconvenient to get in and out. The passengers have to keep their legs low for a long time. If they fall asleep, they are still, which makes the venous return of lower limbs slow and easy to form deep venous thrombosis of lower limbs. In addition, passengers on the plane are generally less likely to drink water because of inconvenience, which makes the blood in a hypercoagulable state, thus prone to lower limb deep vein thrombosis and economy class syndrome.
3. What is venous thrombosis?
Under normal conditions, the blood flows normally in the blood vessels and is not easy to coagulate to form thrombus. However, if the blood vessel wall is damaged, the local blood flow is abnormal, or the blood composition is abnormal, thrombus may be formed.
Venous thrombosis means that the blood coagulates in the vein and does not flow. Thrombosis in superficial vein is superficial vein thrombosis, while thrombosis in deep vein is deep vein thrombosis. The blood does not circulate in the vein, which will cause a series of clinical symptoms.
The superficial vein of human skin is a reticular system. If one or several veins are blocked, other veins can compensate and generally will not necrosis. Deep vein thrombosis can cause limb swelling, pain, even pulmonary embolism, heart failure and other serious complications.
4. What harm does lower limb deep vein thrombosis do to human body?
The biggest harm of deep vein thrombosis to human body is the massive thrombus falling off from the vein wall. The falling thrombus is like a boat drifting with the tide. When it encounters thinner blood vessels, it will be stuck there, blocking the blood vessels, affecting the function of the corresponding organs, such as pulmonary embolism, cerebral embolism, etc.
The thicker the blocked deep vein, the greater the harm to the human body. Thrombosis in the femoral vein and iliac vein is very harmful, because the caliber of the femoral vein is generally thicker than that of the main pulmonary artery, and the falling embolus in the femoral vein may lead to serious pulmonary embolism, affect the blood oxygen exchange of the pulmonary circulation, and lead to death due to lack of oxygen; On the other hand, the blood in the right heart cannot enter the pulmonary artery, which will cause acute right heart failure, leading to hypotensive shock and death. This is the so-called disease in the limbs, the harm lies in the lungs.
After entering the chronic stage of thrombosis (more than 30 days), it may cause severe post thrombotic syndrome. It is mainly manifested as positional swelling of the lower limbs. After walking for a distance or standing for a period of time, the lower limbs will become swollen and painful. After a long time, some patients will suffer from incurable ulcers on the skin of their calves.
5. How to prevent deep vein thrombosis?
For older and frail people, people with more basic diseases or patients lying in bed for a long time after surgery, attention should be paid to moving lower limbs, promoting blood circulation and preventing thrombosis.
Some people with high blood viscosity, such as blood diseases or hyperlipidemia, need to use blood activating drugs or anticoagulants to prevent thrombosis.
For healthy people, drinking more water at ordinary times, eating a low oil and low-fat diet, wearing elastic stockings to promote blood flow, and using our dvt prevention pump can also effectively prevent the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis of lower limbs.
